Türkiye is the cheapest destination on our index by a distance, at 46.8 against an EU average of 100. There is a catch worth knowing: alcohol is taxed heavily, so it is the one place that scores 202.6 for a drink. The move is an all-inclusive, where the pricey part is bundled in and the cheap everything-else works in your favour. Long, dependable heat from May to October.

The reliable one, and a short flight
The Algarve gets more guaranteed summer sun than almost anywhere in western Europe, and it is under three hours from most UK airports. Portugal sits near the EU average on cost but well under the pricier Mediterranean spots, and the sandstone coves around Lagos are the reason people come back every year.

Italy is the cheapest of these countries for a drink on our index, at 83.9, and Puglia is its best-value corner: whitewashed towns, long sandy beaches and proper food without the Amalfi mark-up. Hot and dry through the summer, and far calmer than the northern lakes.

If you want heat when everywhere else is cooling off, Cyprus holds a swimmable sea into late October and stays warm well past the UK half-term. Drives on the left, which quietly makes hiring a car less daunting for British visitors. Sea caves and clear water on the west coast are the highlight.

Not everyone wants a heatwave. Madeira is warm all year and rarely uncomfortable, which makes it the pick for older travellers, walkers, and anyone who wilts in peak-summer Spain. Green mountains, sea pools and levada trails instead of a lounger. Book it for spring or autumn.
